Case Study:Custom Annular Ring Powder Molds for a European Research Laboratory

Table of Contents

Project Overview

ZYLAB recently manufactured and delivered two sets of custom annular ring powder molds to a European research laboratory specializing in advanced materials, powder characterization, and sample preparation.

The customer required precision molds for pressing powder materials into annular specimens with a central hole. Since standard molds could not meet the required sample dimensions, ZYLAB provided a customized solution designed around the customer’s specifications and laboratory testing requirements.

Annular powder molds are used in various research applications, including catalyst development, powder metallurgy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and infrared spectroscopy.

Customer Requirements

The project involved several key requirements:

  • Custom dimensions: Tailored inner diameter, outer diameter, and specimen thickness to meet specific experimental requirements.

  • Precision annular forming: Accurate component alignment and clearances to help produce consistent ring-shaped samples.

  • High-strength mold material: Cr12MoV alloy tool steel suitable for demanding powder compaction applications.

  • Durability and easy demolding: Reliable performance during repeated laboratory pressing and sample preparation.

ZYLAB’s Customized Solution

ZYLAB manufactured two complete sets of custom annular ring powder molds using Cr12MoV alloy tool steel, with a specified heat-treated hardness of HRC 60–62.

Each set includes a mold core, die sleeve, and spacers, designed for use with a laboratory hydraulic press. Close attention was paid to concentricity, flatness, and component clearances to support accurate annular sample formation and smooth demolding.

The customized molds were inspected before shipment and protected with professional packaging for international delivery.

Project Results and Applications

The two sets of custom powder compaction molds were successfully delivered to the customer’s laboratory and put into experimental use.

The customized solution supports the preparation of ring-shaped powder specimens for:

  • Catalyst research and development

  • Powder metallurgy

  • X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis

  • Infrared spectroscopy

  • Advanced material characterization

By matching the mold design to the customer’s sample specifications, the solution supports consistent specimen preparation and more reliable laboratory testing workflows.
